Speed, A New and Accurat [sic] Map of the World, 1626 (1676 edition). 15¼ x 20½. Uncolored as issued. Internal tear; small lost area in Macedonia (approximately ½" x 1/8") expertly repaired; small margins as usual. $10,000.00 [SOLD]

A beautifully-engraved double-hemisphere map. The first English world map to show California as an island. Notes on the map mention important explorations, especially those by Englishmen. The elaborate design has figures representing the elements of Water, Earth, Fire and "Aire" and portraits of the circumnavigators Drake, Cavendish, Magellan, and van Noort. Celestial hemispheres filled with Zodiacal signs are above and below the center of the map. In the corners are astronomical vignettes including eclipses of the sun and of the moon, a "Figure of a Sphere," and a plan of the heavens with the Earth at the center. In 1651 the date on the plate was changed and remained the same for all subsequent editions, this one being the 1676 edition published by Bassett and Chiswell.
