Gallery: Middle East: Details [Arabia, Persia, India] ![]() Anonymous, Persia sive Shahistan, circa 1740. 10¼ x 14¼. Outline color. Tide marks in upper margin, else Very Good. [SOLD] The map is centered on Persia, but extends from Cyprus to east of the Ganges and as far north as the Caspian Sea. Uses the names of Classical times, thus "Arabia Felix," the Malaysian Peninsula is "Chersonesus Aurea." It includes nearly all of India and part of Ceylon / Sri Lanka, here called "Vertex Taprobane." One could mark out Alexander the Great's ten-year campaign through Asia on this map, from his landing on the shores of Lebanon ("Phoenicia") to the Persian capitol at Persepolis and ultimately to the Indus River and the difficult return along the shores of the Indian Ocean ("Mare Erythraeum"). How to place an order and shipping details. |
