J.B.F. Russell & Co.'s Map of the City of Chicago.... Chicago, 1854. 20½ x 15½. Original stencil color. Ragged left margin, fold separation, edge tear and one clean tear into map repaired. A few tiny ink doodles (flowers and leaves?) in a blank area. Rare. SOLD

Litho by H. Acheson of Chicago. Russell & Co. was a real estate firm and auctioneer. The map was also issued by other realtors active at the time. It extends from Fullerton south to Ridgely Place [31st St.] and west from the Lake to the township line [Western Ave.]. The key locates public buildings. Population statistics show the city's growth from 4,479 in 1840 to 60,652 in 1853.

A sandy beach runs north from the river, narrowing from Ontario to Bishop (Division) Street. Names in the 28th and 29th wards reflect the recent war with Mexico: Palo Alto, Monterey, Buena Vista and Rio Grande.
