A large-scale map focusing on the Peloponnese and the Gulf of Lepanto where the naval battle between fleets of the Holy League (principally Spanish-Italian forces) and the Ottoman Empire took place in 1571. This was the last notable battle fought with galleys, and the campaign attracted volunteers from all over Europe including author Miguel Cervantes (who lost his left hand in combat) and Elizabethan sea dog Sir Richard Grenville. Ottoman expansion to the west was effectively, if temporarily, ended with the destruction of most of their fleet and the loss of many experienced seamen.
