Gallery: Catalog 29

Dear Friends,

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first observations using a telescope, and thus is the International Year of Astronomy. In celebration, the Adler Planetarium's exhibit "Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass" is a don't-miss event. At the same time you can see, as part of the permanent exhibit "Universe In Your Hands," rare and beautiful astrolabes, armillary spheres and sundials from the Adler's superb collections.

Map lovers also have reason to celebrate with the opening this year of the Touchton Map Gallery at the Tampa Bay History Center. It's a great way to study the history of the southeast through looking at old maps. Further cause for celebration is the grand re-opening of the newly expanded Osher Map Library in October. The Osher houses a fine collection of maps of American interest and is home to the Smith Center For Cartographic Education.

A few years ago we were amused by a New Yorker cartoon touting the advantages of shopping at an "Off-Line Store." These included seeing an item actual size and being able to "take it home as soon as you pay for it." On-line shopping is a great convenience, but those who crave the off-line experience are invited to stop by our gallery. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 - 5:00, and by appointment.

No matter which way you view them, a few highlights include an exquisitely colored bird's-eye view of Lake Garda (#47), a rare circa 1790 sampler map embroidered on silk (#36), Danckerts' map of fortresses in Morea (#49), and our own homage to the International Year of Astronomy, a group of engravings of astronomical instruments (#4-8). We also are pleased to offer maps by two women mapmakers, the mysterious Miss F.H. Dougherty (#24) and the well-known Anna Beeck (#43).

Sincerely,

George & Mary

The Cockpit of Europe

The Low Countries – principally modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands – earned the nickname "Cockpit of Europe" because of the many battles fought within their borders. From the Dutch revolt against Spain to the wars of Louis XIV and Marlborough, to Napoleon and Wellington, and the carnage of World War I, this compact but strategically important area was subject to repeated invasions, battles and sieges. The following four maps illustrate some 18th century conflicts.
