Gallery: Catalog 28

Dear Friends,

As those who were fortunate enough to visit Chicago's Festival of Maps last year were reminded, maps have been used for many more purposes than merely finding one's way.

We've felt maps used for teaching to be of particular interest – from the sweet little primers designed for young children by such authors as Sarah Cornell, to "classical" atlases intended to illustrate ancient history for students of Latin and Greek.

With that in mind we bring your attention to a manuscript atlas drawn by a young student in England (#5), a scarce and elaborate school-room portfolio (#11), a 1797 fill-in-the-blanks map of the western hemisphere (#14), and a "bed-sheet map" of Asia issued by an American missionary society (#47).

Other highlights of this catalog include the famed Holster Atlas of the American Revolutionary War (#1), Blaeu's world map (#7) – an exemplar of baroque map design, and French and Indian War plans from Mary Ann Rocque's rare A Set of Plans and Forts in America... (#20-22).

All items in this catalog may be viewed on our website. We invite those in the Chicago area to visit our gallery; regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. If you are traveling any distance we recommend calling ahead to confirm. We are also happy to see people by appointment, so don't be shy about calling if our schedule doesn't fit yours.

Sincerely,

George & Mary
