Gallery: Catalog 27

Dear Friends,

Map-lovers from all over the world are heading for Chicago as The Festival of Maps gets underway in November. The Field Museum is but one of 30+ participants (including the Newberry Library, the Adler Planetarium and the Oriental Institute) celebrating maps in history, culture and art. The Field's "Maps – Finding Our Way in the World" features such treasures as manuscript maps by Leonardo da Vinci and Presidents Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln – and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

For a full listing and schedules visit http://festivalofmaps.org. If you're coming to Chicago for the Festival (or for any other reason) be sure to stop by our gallery which is just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. Check our website or call for directions. Regular business hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 to 5:00, and by appointment. We're almost always in during posted hours, but we recommend calling ahead to confirm.

Some highlights from this catalog: two maps dealing with early financial disasters (the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles), items 14 and 24; a rare map of Tibet (#51), a map of the Sudan and Darfur at the time of the siege of Khartoum (#45), and maps of the Russian Empire (#34-42). We're also pleased to offer a rare "survivor" – a ribbon map of the Mississippi River, more than 10 feet long and less than 3" wide, intact in its original case (#21). We like to imagine Bart Maverick pulling it from his vest pocket (with a spare ace or two) while his paddle-wheeler carries him along the Father of Waters. Other Americana of note are maps by Lea & Overton (#6) and Mary Ann Rocque (#8), and an early map naming the U.S. by Brion de la Tour (#16).

Sincerely,

George & Mary
