Catalog 26
Dear Friends,
Time flies when you're having fun, they say, and we've had our share since 1976 when George
entered the antique map trade. As we reminisce about the good old days, we don't know whether to
laugh or sigh over the prices in our first catalog (1978). We sold a Blaeu America for $1,250 and
a Tallis atlas for $750. Would that we could climb into Doc Brown's time-traveling De Lorean to
stockpile maps at 1970s prices for today's market!
Some of our favorite memories involve the offbeat: finding the Gerrymander map for a client with
a strong interest in politics; or a manuscript map of the English army's line of march to
Dettingen in 1743 which marked the last time a British monarch personally led troops into battle.
The map found a fitting home in the British Library.
Among the curiosities we've handled, two in particular come to mind: a 19th century ivory
netsuke with a map of Japan carved on its surface, and a World War I field officer's brass map
case. These memories underline one of the pleasures of maintaining an open shop - the diverse
material that comes in "over the transom."
For some unusual items in this catalog we direct you to #7 a Sanson / Covens & Mortier world map
on a polar projection, #24 Wyld's map delineating the state of Franklinia, #27 Tarleton's
Yorktown, and #49 Jansson's Madrid.
With thanks to our many friends who have made the last thirty years possible.
Sincerely,
George & Mary
