Mortier edition of Jaillot's decorative map. California is an Island and the land of "Jesso" (possibly Hokkaido) is seen in the Pacific. Internal geography is distorted with an east-west mountain range separating New France from the south. The Mississippi River angles southwest as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico. The Great Lakes are open-ended to the west after Sanson. The cartouche features Native American warriors, parrots and other symbols of the New World as well as the arms of the Dauphin (heir to Louis XIV). Burden 438.
