China under the Ching (Manchu) Dynasty. China was near its greatest territorial extent under Emperor Chien Lung (ruled 1735-96). Tibet is just beyond China's western border and the Gobi desert is seen to the north. The map also shows Korea, most of Japan and Formosa. The cartouche has a Mandarin sitting under an umbrella while smoking a remarkably long pipe and studying a bird delicately perched on his finger.
