Gallery: Africa: Details

[Northern Africa]

Munster, Aphricae Tabula IIII, circa 1550. 10 x 13¼. Uncolored woodcut. A strong impression. Centerfold split with tiny loss a lower border; light tide marks mostly in the margins; else VG. $400.00

Munster's interpretation of Ptolemaic Africa. This map actually shows three lakes in central Africa as the source of the Nile. The lakes are fed by rivers emanating from the Mountains of the Moon just to their south. A large mountain range runs North-South paralleling the Nile. The inscription "Troglodyte" is in the Horn of Africa. At 20 degrees south latitude - the bottom of the map - is the note "Terra Ptolemeo incognita" (land unknown to Ptolemy).
