Gallery: Africa: Details

Pinkerton, Africa, 1814. 27½ x 19¾. Original outline color. Darkening at centerfold from old guard; 1½" internal tear across centerfold; else a nice copy. [SOLD]

Knowledge of Africa's geography was still limited when this map was made, and "Unknown Parts" appears across large parts of the interior, though coastal regions are well mapped. However, the map does contain one of the greatest of all geographical fallacies - the mythical "Mountains of Kong." This range is pictured extending from Guinea near the Atlantic east across the continent until it meets the "Mountains of the Moon" and a supposed source of the Nile in central Africa - a distance of more than 2000 miles. The caption states "Range of Mountains supposed to extend across the continent." When it comes to bizarre geography, this map is exceptional for one produced in modern times.
