Gallery: Africa: Details

Heyns, Africa, 1598. 5½ x 6½. BW woodcut. Lightly age-toned, a little show-thru of text verso, else Fine. $350.00

Zacharias Heyns was the son of Pieter Heyns, who wrote the rhyming text for the first edition of Ortelius' Epitome. His little map of Africa shows the source of the Nile as two large lakes in central Africa. Madagascar is named "IS Laurens [Isle Saint Laurence]." Part of a large southern continent called "Magallanica Terra Australis" is seen. Neither Norwich nor Tooley lists this Scarce map. Reference: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Z.Hey 1 (3).
