[Civil War]

Harper's Weekly, Map Showing the Comparitive [sic] Area of the Northern and Southern States, East of the Rocky Mountains. 1861, February 23, 1861. 9¼ x 13¾. Black & white. Fine. $100.00 [SOLD]

The Northern states are shaded while the Southern states are left white. The western battleground states of Missouri and Kansas ("Bloody Kansas") are shown respectively as Southern and Northern. This map was published as hostilities between North and South were beginning. Though Beauregard's bombardment of Fort Sumter took place on April 12, 1861, conflict began earlier. Southern States began to secede after Lincoln's election in November of 1860. Even before Lincoln took office President Buchanan sent supplies and reinforcements to Fort Sumter. On January 9th the steamer Star of the West was fired on by South Carolina and forced to retreat. Also in January there was a standoff between Union and Confederate forces at Fort Pickens in Florida.
