[Sudan] Illustrated London News, Birds Eye View Of The Soudan And Surrounding Countries. London, undated but c. 1884-85. 14¾ x 20¼. Tinted litho. Top margin close-trimmed; old cf reinforcement and slight cf discoloration, probably residue of an earlier tape repair, else VG.

A color supplement printed by Maclure & Macdonald. An inset includes several views, and distances between various cities from Cairo to Khartoum are listed below. In 1884 the Khedive of Egypt appointed Charles George "Chinese" Gordon governor general of Sudan, partly to counteract military successes by rebel forces of the Mahdi. Gordon was able to evacuate thousands of women and children but was himself besieged and then killed at Khartoum on January 25, 1885. Public outcry to support Gordon finally forced Gladstone to send a relief column which arrived two day's after Gordon's death. This undated map probably was issued in late 1884 or early 1885 before news of his death reached England. An uncommon memento of a legendary event. DuPuy and DuPuy, Encyclopedia Of Military History.
