A beautifully designed map with lovely, rich original color; engraved by Johann-Christoph Steinberger (1680-1727). A surround of nearly 2" wide displays 19 inset plans of cities and forts relating to the many campaigns of Louis XIV. Bust portraits of Louis and the Dauphin flank the title drape.
Keys identify administrative and judicial districts, battle sites, harbors and much more. This map commemorates French victories from the Spanish town of Roses to Hamburg and to Algiers – even the capture of an English fort on the Gambia River in Guinea.
