[S. Amer., South Sea Bubble; Isle of Calif.] Moll, A New & Exact Map of the Coast, Countries and Islands within ye Limits of ye South Sea Company, from ye River Aranoca to Terra del Fuego, and from thence through ye South Sea, to ye North Part of California.... London, c. 1719. 26 x 19½. Original olc; slight darkening at lower margin, else VG+. $1,500.00

Another early Bubble, almost concurrent with the Mississippi Bubble. A modest trading agreement with Spain (the Asiento treaty, 1716) bred "irrational exuberance" in trading white-hot shares in the South Sea Company. The resultant crash ruined thousands and even clever people took a haircut. Reportedly Sir Isaac Newton lost £20,000 in the Bubble (a huge fortune at the time) and refused to speak of it again for the rest of his life.

This is the enhanced State 2, with three large inset maps of the harbors of Baldivia (Valdivia), Giuaquil, and Chiloe added on an attached sheet at the top. Eight smaller insets include Acapulco, the Galapagos, Juan Fernandez Island (where the marooned Alexander Selkirk inspired Defoe's Robinson Crusoe), and the fictitious Pepys Island named for the diarist and long-time Clerk of the Navy Board Samuel Pepys.

Arrows indicate prevailing winds. Sir Francis Drake Point on the Island of California is marked. As usual, Moll adds commentary throughout the map, with one of his famously cranky tirades against erroneous maps published by competitors. McLaughlin #181-2.
