Ten-Foot Map of Ole Man River

[Mississippi R.] Colony & Fairchild, Ribbon Map of the Father of Waters, St. Louis, 1866. 121 x 2¾ in a cylindrical case 2" diameter x 3" wide. Fine. SOLD

A highly detailed map of the Mississippi in its original paper-covered wood case and metal crank to turn the map. Designed for travelers on the River. Shows distances from the mouth to its headwaters at Lake Itasca. Names towns and some land owners: Jefferson Davis' plantation is marked just below Mile 460. Interesting comments such as "Steamboat fares vary from two to four cents per mile, staterooms and meals included." A very nice example of cartographic ephemera.
