Cannibals in Texas

[SE; Miss. Bubble] Senex, A Map of Louisiana And Of The River Mississipi [sic]. London, c. 1719. 19 x 22½. Orig. olc. VG. SOLD

The geography derives from De L'Isle, and the many captions are direct translations including the Wandering Man-Eating Indians on the Texas coast. The paths of several explorers are indicated and the site of LaSalle's death is noted. A few settlements in the west are dated 1705 and one – the Pueblo de Pecuries – was "founded a little while ago." Dedicated to William Law of Laurenston, brother of the famous John Law whose scheme to develop the region resulted in the first great stock market crash, the Mississippi Bubble of 1719.

The cartouche features Fame, putti with cornucopias, a river god representing the Father of Waters, and two cherubs engaged in mining operations. It was thought the region teemed with silver and gold. Wheat, Trans-Miss #100.
