"A small but highly important map" – Tooley

[Isle of Calif.] De Fer, Cette Carte de Californie et du Nouveau Mexique.... Paris, 1705. 8¾ x 13¼. Olc. VG.

The Island of California with an indented northern coast line. Based on a manuscript by Father Kino, and with a key identifying over 300 towns, villages and missions. The island is captioned "California ou Carolinas" as Kino thought it should be named after King Charles II of Spain. However, Charles died in November of 1700 and his successor Phillip V preferred the old name.

Kino's 1701 discovery that the Gulf of California terminated near the mouth of the Colorado should have disproved the island theory, but the myth died hard – not until an official pronouncement by King Ferdinand VI in 1747. Leighly #110; McLaughlin 134; Tooley #62; Wagner, NW, p. 462. $1,750.00
