[Eastern N. A., Great Lakes, Canada] Le Rouge/Mitchell, Amerique Septentrionale avec les Routes, Distances en miles, Villages et Etablissements.... Paris, 1756 (edition of circa 1776). 25¾ x 75. Four sheets (of eight) joined. Contemporary olc. Strong impression. Fine. $8,500.00

The upper four sheets of the Le Rouge edition of John Mitchell's famous map of 1755, which is of primary importance in American history. It was prepared with great care, drawing upon many previously unpublished sources. Mitchell influenced mapmakers for more than a generation, and his was the only map used at the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Covers the area from what is now Iowa to Newfoundland. There is a large inset of Hudson Bay. It was the best map at the time despite its faults, notably the high plateau in Michigan and the false islands in Lake Superior (after Bellin). The Canadian border is marked by a dotted line. At upper right is a German text note which occurs in several editions of Le Rouge. Lac George is present on this edition. Ristow (ed.), A La Carte, 102-113; Fite & Freeman #47.
