[W. Hemi.] Lea & Overton, A New Mapp of America Devided According to the Best and Latest Observations...of the seaverall Countries that Belong to ye English which are wholly left out in all French and Dutch Maps... London, c. 1688. 18¾ x 22. Orig. col. Moderately age-toned, else VG. $13,500.00

Rare. Usually issued as a separate, though this copy was probably bound into a composite atlas as it has a centerfold and guard. With California as an Island, the north part of which is named New Albion, and a sketchy depiction of the Straits of Anian. British possessions are called the English Empire on the main map and also on the polar projection inset. An unusual feature is the depiction of the Great Lakes, minus Lake Michigan, which are shown open-ended. The St. Lawrence River flows directly from Lake Superior into the Atlantic, and the other lakes are stacked vertically beneath, connected by unnamed rivers. A very pro-British map: in addition to the title and use of the term "English Empire" is the placement of the royal arms almost dead center of the continent. The map is dedicated to the Duke of Beaufort, a member of James II's privy council. Burden, Mapping of North America II, #593; McLaughlin #106.
