Franklinia, a would-be state, existed between 1784-88. Considered part of North Carolina during the colonial period and formally annexed by that state in 1776, settlers declared their independence in 1784 by enacting a state constitution. However, difficulties with Native Americans, the Spanish, land speculators and, most significantly, failure to get Congressional recognition doomed its existence. The region was absorbed by Tennessee which achieved statehood in 1796. A fascinating if somewhat distorted and dated view of the U.S. Baynton-Williams, "Maps marking the American State of Franklin," in TMC 72 (Autumn, 1995), pp. 12-17, #17; Phillips, Atlases 6043, #38
