[Eastern N. Amer.] Ottens, Carte de la Nouvelle France..., Amsterdam, 1720. 19 x 21½. Orig. body color. Close-trimmed top margin with part of neatline shaved. Repair to small tear in lower cf, else VG. $2,500.00

Brilliant old color; a strong impression. Based on De Fer's 1718 map, with insets of the Gulf Coast, the approaches to Quebec, and a bird's-eye view of the city. Many Indian settlements and tribes are named and interspersed with charming vignettes of hunting scenes and the like, some based on those in Blaeu and Jansson maps. Captions provide information about LaSalle's ill-fated landing on the Texas coast, other historical events and topical information. A note along the Virginia border states that the inhabitants live in caves to protect themselves from the great heat! Another caption suggests the longitude and latitude for the source of the Mississippi. Kershaw 336; McCorkle 719.5
