Seutter, Diversi Globi Terr-Aquer Statione Variante... Augsburg, ca. 1725. 19½ x 23. Original body color. Fine. SOLD

An excellent example of the German scientific world map. The two large hemispheres are complemented by eight smaller spheres illustrating polar and oblique projections, and by four diagrammatic spheres. Two draped cartouches and the heads of 31 wind gods fill almost all remaining space. Explorers' tracks are shown in both large hemispheres, but principally in the Pacific; included are those of Magellan, Tasman, Dampier, and (the most recent, dated 1710) S. Antoine in the northern Pacific. Terra Essonis joins the American mainland with no suggestion of the Straits of Anian, and Japan is distorted. A lake in southern Africa serves as the source for both the Nile and the Niger. The Isle of California appears in six of the spheres. Frisland is still in the north Atlantic, but the Latin caption describes it as "perhaps legendary or else submerged." There is a hint of coastline south of Tristan de Cunha, named Terra Vitae.
