Gallery: Catalog: Details ![]() [Polar projection] Sanson / Covens & Mortier, Les Deux Arctique ou Septentrionale, et Antarctique ou Meridionale... Amsterdam, ca. 1715. 17 x 20¾; rich, full original color. Fine. SOLD Two large polar projections are augmented with two smaller hemispheres on oblique projections. The top shows Paris at dead center (also with California as an island) while the lower displays "antipodes de Paris" at center. The maps are after Sanson, but the eye-filling vignettes are cribbed from Visscher and were designed by Nicolaes Berchem who used mythological figures to represent the elements: Fire by the abduction of Persephone; Air by Zeus and Hera in a chariot drawn by eagles; Earth by Demeter at harvest-time; and Water by Poseidon and his attending mermen-and-maids. A beautiful map with exceptional early color. Shirley 408 (Sanson edition). How to place an order and shipping details. |
