The internal communications referred to in the map are, of course, railroads. The map extends to Texas with the remainder of the American west shown in a large inset; other insets include Cuba, Havana environs, and the environs of Niagra Falls. The Lippincott edition with lovely, vivid color to the map. Text covers the usual gazetteer material with statistics from the 1850 census; the appendices list railroads, military posts and commanders, etc.
