Pike, Exploratory Travels Through the Western Territories of North America... London, 1811. 4to. Early 19th century polished calf; elaborate gold-tooled spine with raised bands, red leather label. Two maps, one folding. The large map ...the Interior of Louisiana with a part of New Mexico is foxed as are the end papers and title page, else Fine. The first London Edition, edited by Thomas Rees with slightly altered text and some scientific data from the American edition omitted. SOLD

Best known for the mountain which bears his name, Zebulon Pike's explorations are as significant for the American Southwest as were Lewis & Clark's to the Northwest. Editor Rees praises Pike's courage, though he criticizes editing of the American edition. Graff 3292; Howes P-373; Wagner-Camp 9:2.
