[Atlas; America] Sanson, L'Amerique, en Plusiers Cartes Nouvelles.... Paris, n.d. (1662-67). Small 4to. 40 unnumbered text leaves, 15 unnumbered double-page maps with contemporary outline color. 18th century sheep with raised bands and red leather label. Hinges worn but sound. Text and maps age-toned. Audience de Mexico, Amerique Meridionale and Le Paraguay have noticeable darkening in the margins. Provenance: With the bookplate of Hermon Dunlap Smith, noted Great Lakes collector and benefactor of the Newberry Library's Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography. $8,500.00

A variant edition. Phillips and Pastoureau report three Paris editions of this atlas, dated 1657, 1662 and undated circa 1667. Ours combines text and maps of the 1662 edition with the title page of the circa 1667 edition, thus it appears to be an unrecorded intermediate version. Of particular interest are the Americque Septentrionale based on Sanson's 1650 folio map depicting the Isle of California and five Great Lakes, Le Canada showing the Great Lakes in detail, La Floride dealing with the Southeast, and Audience de Guadalajara focusing on the California island and the adjoining mainland. The maps correspond to Burden State 2. See Burden 324 - 327; Pastoureau, Sanson II B and Sanson II C; Phillips 1152 and 1153; Shirley, Maps in the Atlases of the British Library T.SAN–7a and T.SAN–7b.
